InHabit keeps together the concepts of housing, human relationships and economy, in order to rebuild a urban identity.The main challenge of the project is to re-inhabit the two historic centers of Ragusa, a UNESCO heritage site since 2002. In the european Year of Cultural Heritage, we raise cooperative housing as a tool to protect the heritage of Mediterranean urban culture. Premises are: the depopulation of the historic center (widespread in Ragusa), the rapid increase and ghettoization of migrants (Ragusa is the first Italian landing place for migratory flows), unsustainable urban expansion policies and gentrification as a possible future scenario. To face those issues, is proposed a process of social innovation and co-design, guided by the Municipality but developed bottom-up, together with the citizens and a team of local and national partners. The relationship between habitat and community is mended through two pilot projects of cooperative and collaborative housing in the historical centers. The young citizen, the main target of the project, becomes manager and promoter of his own habitat, through shared and participatory choices. Home sharing is the basis for building a community: the activation of new economic activities represents sustainability over time. The public space becomes an extension of the private one, a further instrument to reach a community that also integrates weak subjects, formulate housing models suitable for Mediterranean historical centers, political experiments to reactivate the socio-economic fabric starting from cooperative models and care for the common good.
