After decades of real estate bubble, an indiscriminate occupation of land and an ownership culture, PAX-Patios de la Axerquía proposes an innovative operation of gobernance that fosters a change of urban model consistent with the aim of Europe 20/20/20 and a Smart, Sustainable and Inclusive City: from speculation to the culture of rehabilitation.
The path of a multilevel co-management between public administration and social economy is on the basis of the acquisition and using vacant houses and public space. That means a model of energy transition through its social sustainability. The rehabilitation of the patio-houses of Axerquía, threatened by gentrification, means to restore the environmental value of the Mediterranean city and upgrade its history in contemporary key with citizenship: from its architectural value as World Heritage to its anthropological value as Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
The complementary between innovative mechanisms of sustainable urban development opens a path of virtuous policies for densification of the existing city with the local population, generation of microemployment and support for collective projects that incorporate refugees and migrants in a solidarity system.
Updating the urban, environmental, social and economic value of the traditional city is a step toward understanding the Mediterranean city as an undeniable value of our past and, at the same time, as an essential tool for our future in a Smart, Sustainable and Inclusive Europe. The project has been developed together with the Municipality of Cordoba for the first UIA call (Urban Innovative Actions)in 2016. Afterwards, it grew through a bottom-up process with the local stakeholders.
