The project’s strategy is the development of the old town in the contemporary city, starting from those places with the greater legacy in terms of history and landscape.
The competition area is one of those, a connection between the new and the old city (east-west) and the sea (north-south), shaped as a hourglass.
The old productive site (a salt mine) has been occupied by the finance police after the second world war and today it needs to re-discover its value as a public space.
The challange is a re-connection, in terms of geography and landscape, reached by a new public space, equipped for free time, sport and leisure.
This principle today allows to requalify the Argonauti beach and tomorrow it could be applied also to the south side of the area:
• today, including the sport equipment of the finance police, connecting the adjacent bastion (requalified as a viewpoint), enlarging the Ghiaie park and creating a new walkpath between the old city and a new bigger and more functional beach;
• tomorrow, including the remaining site of the finance police buildings, mantaining the more significant ones and converting them with collective functions (possibly cultural or social), or mantaining the actual functions, but with a more open urban design, permeabile by citizens and respectful of local history, requalifying the exsisting marina.
