Piazza Castello in Casale Monferrato, on the river Po, is today a big open air parking area surrounding the historical monument compromizing the relation between town and territory. The project, placet first in the competition but with the assignment of the third prize, creates the technical-planning conditions to start a cultural transformation of the local society in order to select different uses for the castle’s urban space in relation to town’s general structure and especially the Po river. The core of the project is the big grass park square-shaped around thye castle, interpreting in a contemporary way its river relation: simple form connecting the town and the territory and generate a green pedestrian restino space around the castle, and motivating a cultural recreational use for this place where everyone can see the castle and the river. Second important theme is the reshaping of the zone between the castle and the rest of the town both in pedestrian squares and in private areas southbound. These transformations are allowed by the ridefinition of the road network and the buried parking system, in order to give the castle back to the town and its historical relation with river Po.
